Silas

I’d been going over some tax documents all afternoon, unable to make any real progress since all I could think of was how badly I needed to see Cory. I didn’t think I could stand being separated from him much longer. I’d been longing for a mate for years, and it seemed unfair that now that I’d found him—and thoroughly fallen for him—I couldn’t be with him.

I sensed someone approaching before I heard the knock on my office door. I looked up and motioned for Shelley to come in. “What’s up?”

“Finn just called. He’s on his way to see you. He said it was urgent, but it’s not about the baby, and we shouldn’t worry.”

If he didn’t want us to worry, he should’ve told us what it’s about. “What else did he say?”

“He just asked if I could make sure you were available when he got here.”

“How long since he called?”

“It was right before I stepped in here,” she said.

I grabbed up my phone and dialed Finn’s number. “Damn, it’s going straight to voicemail.”

“Don’t worry. I’m sure he’s fine. I moved your meeting with Gavin until right before dinner, and he said he could meet with you after dinner if you needed more time.”

I sighed. “I really wanted to get that meeting in today. We should’ve already had these summer seed orders in, but I just can’t decide about the new varieties.”

“Just order them all. I get the feeling it’s the year for new things.”

“I get the sense you’re talking about more than just seeds.”

“Seeds. Beautiful young mates who are probably missing you like crazy.”

I frowned. “I’m not going to push Cory to quit his job.”

“I know, but I can tell how much you miss him.”

When she headed back to her desk, I closed my laptop and picked up one of the seed catalogs I’d been looking through earlier, but I couldn’t concentrate on that either. I kept wondering what Finn needed that was so urgent. Why couldn’t he have just called? Finally, I gave up and stood, needing to move around. I wandered onto the front porch where I could watch for Finn’s car. A few moments later, I heard the crunch of gravel under tires, but when the car came into view, it wasn’t Finn’s. It was Cory’s.

My pulse sped up, and it was all I could do not to run down the road to meet them. Had Finn meant to surprise me by bringing Cory by, or was there truly something he or Cory needed to tell me?

When the car came to a stop, I rushed down from the porch and pulled Cory’s door open. He fell into my arms immediately, and I drew in his scent as he nuzzled my neck.

“It’s so good to see you,” I murmured. Then I realized Finn was still in the car. “Do you need help?”

“No, Alpha Silas. I’m just watching you two be adorable. I can still get around just fine. I spent all day at the bakery.”

“I know. I didn’t mean to imply—”

“It’s fine.
